A Whole New World
Have you seen any version of the movie, Aladdin? This movie is about a young man, who lives on the street. He and his monkey steal food from the local street merchants. His life begins to change when he accidentally encounters a disguised princess. Through various circumstances, the princess introduced him to a whole new world. At some point, his true identity is uncovered and he must choose between his old life and his new one. Like Aladdin, will we choose to walk in a whole new world or keep hiding in our perceived comfort?
The Story: Judges 6:11-18
In Judges 6:11-18, the angel of the Lord came and sat in the same area where Gideon was threshing wheat so he could hide the grain from the Midianites. The angel told him that he was a mighty hero and the Lord was with him. Gideon questioned the angel’s statement because of what was happening to the Israelites. At that, the Lord told him to go and rescue Israel with the strength he had because God was sending him. Gideon recounted the reasons he was unqualified for the assignment. However, the Lord persisted that Gideon would defeat the Midianites as if they were one man. Before he could believe the Lord’s words, Gideon asked for a sign.
The Lesson
These verses reveal the offer of a whole new world. Gideon was accustomed to seeing himself as small and unimportant. While intruders were in the land, he protected the grain. Yes, he was working, but God had a higher and best use for him. Although he couldn’t see it, the Lord wanted to introduce him to a whole new world.
Often, we are comfortable with our environments and routines. Whether they’re functional or dysfunctional, we find a way to cope with things as they are. But are we living beneath God’s best for us? This is an individual question between you and God. He has us here for His purpose and our job is to discover what it is and do it. There’s a whole new world waiting!
